History

historyAlthough there was certainly some organised rowing and competitions previously, the first minutes book of Bewdley Rowing Club records its foundation in 1877. By the early 1880’s the club had secured from the borough council the tenancy of a mooring station below Bewdley Bridge, where the public garden is now. This was to be the club’s headquarters until after the Second World War.

In those days there was no question of winter rowing, which is now taken for granted. The season began on a set day in March, followed shortly by the annual general meeting and finished in October, usually with the club sports and a supper(a tradition which continues to this day with the Club Dinner and Dance held in November).

historyIntermittently from 1903, there was talk of erecting a permanent boathouse on finding suitable land, but it was not until 1930 that the present site was purchased through the generosity of the late Mr G.R. Woodward, father of the former President, Derek Woodward - who's presence at the club is still sadly missed. Plans were developed for building on the site and an appeal fund was launched, but nothing was achieved before war, once more, intervened. As previously, during the First World War, the club was partially closed with many members serving in the forces.

historyFirst steps began towards provision of the Club’s present impressive headquarters shortly after the end of the war.

In 1949, a wooden club house was opened on the site and a ‘nissen hut’ boathouse erected. From that time progress has been continuous with the present club and boathouse being opened in 1970.

There have been notable successes for Bewdley crews over the years including impressive wins at Henley Regatta, The Head of the River Race on the Thames, the National Championships and at regattas and head of the river races, regional and national. history
