Women Savour Golden Glory
Kidderminster Shuttle, Thursday 19 June

BEWDLEY Rowing Club's women’s squad returned from the National Veteran’s Championship with an impressive haul of medals.

The club saw gold, two silvers and a bronze secured over the weekend.

The women’s novice eight crew of Linda Withey, Sonia Grinnal, Frances Glen, Sarah Ray, Catherine Allen, Carol Jackson, Sarah Bastida and cox/coach Jo Atkinson produced a spirited performance to secure third place.

Still only in its first year competing, the crew finished just behind strong line-ups from Monmouth and Cambridge club Champions of the Thames.

After a short rest, the coxed four of Withey, Grinnal, Wagstaff, Ray and Atkinson took to the water again for their final against Oundle Town.

A strong start by both crews saw the Bewdley crew gain a boat length’s lead, which they extended to clear water over their rivals.

Despite a strong push by Oundle in the last quarter of the race, the Bewdley crew held onto the gold medal position to win by two lengths.

Making a splash: Crews coached by rowing club members took to the River Severn to compete in Bewdley's Pub and Club Regatta.

RECORD numbers of people flocked to Bewdley's riverside for the town's Pub and Club Regatta.

Saturday's event was organised by Bewdley Rowing Club and teams of four took to the water to compete. Men, women and mixed crews were coxed by rowing club members.

Hundreds of people watched and there were 45 entries. Prizes were presented by the club's president, Chris Hart and captain, Craig Robinson.

The Black Boy Hotel walked away with a trophy for the men's coxed fours, while HR's Cafe won the ladies coxed fours and Men in Oars were the winners of the mixed crew trophy.

Robert Jones, a member of the club for 10 years, said: "The day went fantastically well. We're really pleased with how it went.

"It was a great day for the town and what helped us an awful lot was that we had more than double the amount of entries as last year. There were around 600 people who came out to watch.

"It was a big success and it gives us something to build on for next year's event. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves."

He added that the club wants to encourage more people to take up the sport and said the winners would be on a float in the town's carnival on Saturday.

Fuel costs link to big sign-up for river race

Express and Star, Friday 30th May 2008

Bewdley’s regatta has received twice as many entries as usual - with soaring petrol prices leading to people looking at ways to enjoy themselves closer to home.

The annual pub and club regatta, organised by Bewdley Rowley Club, which will be held this Saturday from 10am to 6pm, usually has around 25 teams. But this year 43 crews have signed up.

Robert Jones, event organiser, said he believed the event, which draws from the whole of the Wyre Forest district, had benefited from people cutting down on long journeys due to high petrol prices.

He said: “This is the second biggest of our annual events.

“We also hold a regatta in July which was hit by the flooding last year.

“This has meant we have worked hard to publicise the pub and club regatta this year.

“However it has been said people are staying close to home which seems to have helped us as well.

“We are delighted to see such an interest and it should be a fantastic day.”

The race is staged on the River Severn between the rowing club and Bewdley bridge.

The club has been training the teams during the last four weeks to compete in Saturday’s race.
