The 25th/26th July was Bewdley Regatta weekend, with 500 entries over both days from clubs as far afield as Bradford, Liverpool and Northampton producing some spectacular racing. The glorious sunshine of Saturday had the crowds flocking both at the club and in Bewdley town itself.
The Mug House Sprint Eight’s returned again in style at lunchtime on the Saturday, Stourport were not present to defend their title which went to Worcester after some close fought very fast short 200m races.
Bewdley had 18 wins overall throughout the weekend for all areas juniors through to masters and singles up to eights. The weather contrast of Sunday saw the crowds dwindle but this didn’t stop the rowers fighting the elements again producing some very close races, including a re-row!
There were a couple of Bewdley vs Bewdley races; one in the Mixed 8’s but notably in the IM2 4+ event which saw the Novice 4 with sub Steve Price rowing up to IM2 against their fellow eight crew members making an exciting race to watch and guess what… Bewdley won!
This year is the year Bewdley Rowing Club’s senior men are starting to show their real potential which a scratch crew was formed from the growing men’s squad consisting of Jack Chase, James Martyn Smith, Ian Brookes, Oli Bushnell, Dave Bedford, Callum Clifford, Matt Hocking, Aston Carter coxed by Jenny Merchant. They beat an established Intermediate 1 crew from Liverpool University who earlier this year had qualified to race at Henley Royal Regatta.
The weekend’s racing saw a display of the flexibility of Bewdley’s juniors to successfully mix-and-match. Coxed by Rachel James, the junior mixed 8 had good wins on both days. On Saturday, the crew consisted of Kiah Bradley, Penny Gunn, Ed Frost, James Myatt, Will Parker, Elliot Grey, Grace Cox and Sophie Osborne. On Sunday, Kiah Bradley, Sophie Evans, Sam Clifford, James Myatt, Brendan Wrighton, Joe Smith, Penny Gunn and Victoria Williams formed the winning junior crew. For the women, there was further success for the senior 8, while the coxless pair of Jenny Merchant and Laura Ray are now a step away from becoming elite rowers. And, after three years, Jake Main celebrated winning his first Bewdley pot in the J14 single scull. Bewdley Rowing Club Captain Kat Carlyle said: “This was a very successful regatta, not only for the number of wins we have enjoyed, but this year we have had more sponsors than ever. Thank-you to all the local businesses who have supported us.”
