With last years regatta being cancelled due to floods, this year was somewhat different. The regatta went ahead with a large entry of races. Bewdley’s women’s novice 8 were attending their first regatta and came up against stiff opposition in Universities and Schools crews. The novice women’s double of Maddie Whiting and Penny Gunn narrowly missed out on victory but Bewdley came away with two wins; from a mixed double composite of Mel Gunn and Mike from Ross and the Masters D coxless 4 of Mike Parker, John Hinton, Nick Hinton and Rob Heath.
Nottingham Masters and Club Regatta
Bewdley attended this regatta for the first time, it was a good measure for those going to the National Masters Championships next month; to have a ‘warm up’ race on the multi lane Holme Pierrepont 1km course. The crews came up against tough opposition from all over the country. For once the conditions on the man made lake were nearly perfect, there was a slight cross wind but it was clam and sunny compared to the torrent it can be.
Bewdley’s women’s masters C coxed 4 were attending their first regatta of the season and were hoping to continue where they left off last year, which they did. They were in a full field final against Milton Keynes, York City, Stourport, Cantabrigian and Marlow; they led from the first stroke to the last with Marlow breathing heavily down their neck, they came away with the win in a time of 4.02.4 over Marlow 4.03.1 – crew pictured.
Worcester Spring Regatta
Conditions were testing with a strong head wind and changeable rain and sunshine, but this didn’t phase some of the crews as Bewdley came away with a couple of wins over the 850m course.
The masters D 4 switched from coxless to coxed as they continue their preparations for Masters Henley Regatta in July; deciding which class they will race in. With a win in both now this will be something they will have to think long and hard about. They over come two crews from Worcester and one from Stourport – The winning crew was Mike Parker, John Hinton, Nick Hinton, Rob Heath and coxed by Kat Carlyle.
Jill Grove just missed out on a win in her single sculls race. The other win came in the shape of IM3 2x Jimmy Watson and Callum Clifford, they had a strong race and cruised to victory over AB Severn.
The club will be hoping to continue it’s winning ways at Monmouth this weekend.
