BRC pulled out all the stops last weekend (1/2 June). It was our annual pub and club bash, where we welcome non rowers to race competitively on our stretch of river.
It was hot and muggy but calm conditions for our 36 crews who – after just six training sessions – competed against each other in men’s, women’s and mixed categories on Saturday. We saw crews from local pubs, gyms, work places, sports clubs and even a brewery participate. Some crews were put together, never having met before, forging new rowing friendships, and that’s exactly the spirit of pub and club.
Races took place over a 500m course, with supporters gathering on our steps and terrace, and onlookers watched from the bridge and lined the other side of the river to cheer on their favourite. We also featured on BBC Hereford and Worcester radio on Friday.
As usual, crews went all out with bespoke t shirts, fancy dress, multi coloured wigs, Hawaiian shirts but special mention must go to Star Oars, The Cox Strikes Back, dressed as storm troopers complete with their own Darth Vader cox.
After 50 races, with elimination rounds and the best of the rest category, the winners were crowned. In the mixed category, the Black Boy, Wyre Hill were victorious, the Rising Sun scooped the men’s final and the women’s category was won by Dexter’s Midnight Rowers. In the best of the rest, Jo, jo, jo your boat were crowned champions.
Working hard on the BBQ, tea tent, and in a Bewdley first, three bars and a t-shirt stand, as well as doubling up for coxing duties and in the build up to the event, a big thank you to club members who helped out. The day was a wonderful success, enjoyed by all.
